Afghan journalists continue their work despite significant challengesKateb Media

When I became a journalist, Afghanistan had a vibrant, if imperfect, media landscape. Today, that landscape has fundamentally changed. Yet the need for journalism—real journalism—has never been greater.

The Current State

Many media outlets have closed. Many journalists have fled. Those who remain work under restrictions that make independent reporting difficult. Yet somehow, journalism continues.

Why It Matters

In times of uncertainty, accurate information is a lifeline. It helps people make decisions, holds power accountable, and connects communities separated by distance and circumstance.

Looking Forward

The future of Afghan journalism will be shaped by journalists themselves—those inside the country and those in exile—working to maintain the standards and values of their profession.
